SOPHIA’S TOP 6 REASONS TO GO SEE NOBUNNY

I’m a huge Nobunny fan and could just pester you all day saying, “Go to the show, go to the show!” blah blah blah but maybe you’re thinking, “Why the hell should I?”. Well, here is your very poorly written answer:

1) Nobunny is awesome.

That’s just a given. I like to think I have great opinions and I think other people should start agreeing with them.

2.    They are one of my favorite bands to see live.

I’ve seen them when they are just starting the tour, just ending it and somewhere in between. I’ve seen them when there was a decent crowd and when there has only been about 5 people and every time it’s been a blast! The band has great energy, fun stage presence and they rock the hell out.

3.  The lyrics are great.

I have a soft spot in my heart for dirty songs so any band that can go from perverted lyrics like “Come on over I might bite and do bad things with you all night”, then at the same time appeal to my affinity for love songs and write songs about broken hearts with lyrics saying “One last kiss before you’re gone for good”, is instant gold in my mind.

4. The dude is half naked wearing a creepy bunny mask.

That statement alone should peak your curiosity enough to go check them out. If it doesn’t then there’s something wrong with you. Not me. You.

5.   They are all around good guys.

I’ve had the pleasure of getting acquainted and having some good times with the more frequent members of the ever changing line up and regardless if Nobunny is getting “bigger” as far as garage bands go and have been in magazines like Thrasher and Spin, they are still down to earth dudes that appreciate their fans and just want to play some rock n roll and have a good time.

6.    Nobunny Loves You!

If these reasons, straight from my heart, don’t make you want to at least check them out then you’re probably not that fun anyways. Seriously, go to the Holland show space tonight March 4th and I guarantee you will have a good time. What else do you have to do on a Sunday? Go to church then go see a Nobunny. It’s totally appropriate.

MOVING FORWARD

 By, Megan Kay

I first met Dane Haman in the Summer of 2010 at the Portland Zine Symposium where he was at the table next to me selling zines and photographs.  He was from Milwaukee, I was there with the Go For Broke Collective, from Reno. It was my first Symposium, and it made for some really great times, but also, some very long days – 8 hours in a gymnasium talking about your zines , for two days in a row, can be exhausting.  I remember I was outside, taking a break, when Haman came busting through the doors holding his skateboard. He looked at me, said something I can’t remember, but probably along the lines of “Screw this shit.” Then he got on his skateboard and disappeared.

I bought a few of his zines, “Sproink,” which are basically skateboarding journals that also feature Haman’s passion for analog photography (and Hummus…each issue features a review of a different king of hummus.) Then, I figured that like so many other connections made at the Symposium, that would be that. But, little did I know, that events in the coming year would culminate with him moving to Reno! A life change that he has chronicled on his blog, “STAY SHARP,” and also in a new zine that should be out in April.

Haman’s design for the March Showprint is called “Bert,” and it is an image of Bert, the Muppet’s character, doing a “Bert,” which I now know is surfing-inspired, skateboard move, named after surfer Larry Bertlemann. Bert is doing this trick on a ramp of 2x4”s that spell the word, Forward.

“Forward is the Wisconsin state motto, and also one of my personal mottos.”

Haman is relatively new to printmaking. Before this month’s showprint, he had only made a few linoleum block prints as presents for friends, but he is a fan of the hands-on process, and plans on doing more with it.

“It’s a physical thing, it involves your whole body… To use your hands to make something feels really fucking good. I don’t think it will ever get old.

Haman putting the finishing touches on his design.

Photography, though, is Haman’s go-to mechanism for creation.

“It’s my favorite way of responding to things, and trying to do something about them.”

Here’s an exerpt from his mission statement on his Flickr page:

i like photography because its honest, i see it as being a real truth. its something concrete in a swirling mass of fabricated fluff. for the most part, im against using a camera for lies. [if its black and white that means its film. if theres borders that means its film.] all of these things really happened, that is my promise. a physical event transpired in my hands as well as before the lens. quite simply, i really like that. let the heavy hands guide paintbrushes. lets do justice to this experience if possible. thats the mission. in brief, those are my beliefs…”

Since he’s been in Reno, Haman has maintained a steady pace of documenting shows at The Holland Project and other venues, as well as shooting whatever is around him. Those photos, as well as many others, can be found on his Flickr, and his blog so…. go check them out.  And pick up this month’s Showprint! They can now be found at The Holland Project (of course), Bibo I and III, The Great Basin Community Food Co-OP, Java Jungle, Sundance Bookstore, and the ASUN Bookstore on the campus of UNR.
